Finished .......with a few minor touch ups.

Painting this was a very rewarding experience in many ways.  It was such a pleasure to meet the different people who would come by and all the support of those who would honk or give a thumbs up as they drove by.  Thank you San Clemente. I hope this art piece will bring the community joy for years to come.

Painting the Shapes of the animals....
The black shapes were painted first, then the orange.  This took about three different coats of each color.  Meanwhile, meeting a lot of really nice people who walk by and cheer me on.

 Blocking in the Paint....

I started with the blue background and went all around the box.  Adding white to the blue, the clouds began to form.  Then I used the dark blue to outline the waves and added a bit of sunshine.  The painting was beginning to take shape.

Transferring the Drawings to the Box...in a wind tunnel!

Sorry, I don't have photos of day one but it was exciting due to the very windy day.  With carbon paper underneath, I taped the paper drawings to the box then traced the drawing onto the box.  Sounds easy enough, but image the wind blowing and the drawings flying every which way. I had secured the second drawing under a bucket, but when I went to get it I found that it was gone.  It had blown down the street.  Fortunately I found it in some bushes, not before it had been run over by a car!

On Day 2, I used a black sharpie to darken the drawing.

Some of the challenges is the wind, sun, and noise of traffic.  I wore a hat, sunglasses and  earphones with my favorite music.  If you went by and honked, I probably did not hear you, but appreciate your support.

Sketching the Cartoon for the San Clemente Public Art Utility Box

Today I am at the Cottage Gallery in Laguna Beach where I work as the resident artist several days a week.  This gives the public a chance to see an artist working as well as a place to find art for their collection.
Below is the cartoon sketch that I will transfer onto the Utility Box.  I will begin painting on Saturday, April 20-21 and then again on Sunday, April 28.  Come out and see how things are progressing. The sight is right in front of the hospital on Camino De Los Mares, San Clemente.
This sketch will be transferred onto the front and back of the box.

This is the final sketch showing the breaching whale which will be on the two sides.

City prepares boxes for Artist

This week the city will be cleaning and priming the utility boxes in preparation for the artist to paint.  I am very interested in what materials they will be using.  Craig Hunn, informed me that after they clean and clear off old stickers etc. they will use the Primer "UMA" by XIM, which is an Urethane modified acrylic.

Buying the recommended paint for the project and enjoying the LA experience.

After buying paint at NOVO, I went to the Huntington Museum in San Marino to meet with my daughter and pick up my grandson.  When we go to the Huntington we always make a visit to the Lily Pond where sits my sculpture called "Looking for Treasures."  Either the turtles are studying the sculpture or the sculpture should be titled "Looking for Turtles."  It was a beautiful and full day of fun in L.A.
First on the recommended paint list is NOVO PAINT in Culver City, CA.  I decided to make it a day in L.A. rather than to try to buy paint on line.  I brought in the small painting to check with their color samples.  All the colors I chose are color fast and brilliant.  Cadmium Yellow medium, Cadmium Orange medium, Cerulean Blue, Carbon Black, and Titanium White.  I am very excited to begin painting the box, which won't be until after April 14.

GETTING TO KNOW THE ARTIST
Artistʼs approach to the project    - vision and intent
Living here in San Clemente one can enjoy many things but I think what brings most of us here is the touch with nature. I started this project with a rather simple idea of birds in flight. The vision began with wanting to express the feelings of joy and freedom that I experience when observing the birds in flight. While sketching the birds dolphins began to emerge. I realized that I enjoy similar feelings when I see dolphins swimming along our coastline. Through the creative process of painting the images of clouds, waves, birds and dolphins began to flow into one another. The dimension of the side panels suggested the addition of the breaching whales.  I feel it commemorates the natural richness that can be enjoyed in San Clemente and how much we as a community value the natural treasures of sea and sky.
Artistʼs philosophy on public art; why is public art important to you?
Different to a private commission, public art is a wonderful opportunity for the artist to share their vision while giving back to the community.    My goal with this project is to enrich and inspire those who view “In Flight” while representing the communityʼs goals and values.
How does the artistic rendering(s) represent San Clemente?
We are proud to be a city of people who respect and preserve our wildlife. San Clemente, being a bird sanctuary, is a haven for birds whether they nest or migrate. Dolphins as well either migrate or make San Clemente their home, depending on their species. We are blessed to have the open sea at our side as well as the magnificent canyons used as corridors for wildlife. This is our home and where we can proudly live in harmony with nature.
